Bengaluru city Youth Congress
General Secretary Mohammad Haris Nalapad is in the centre of a massive
controversy in the poll-bound state of Karnataka after allegedly
assaulting a young man at a city cafe on Sunday. Nalapad has been
expelled from the state’s ruling party for six years, the Congress
party’s state President G Parameshwara informed on Sunday. He said that
atrocities of any form are not tolerated in INC Karnataka. In the latest
in the row, Nalapad surrendered before the police on Monday amid rising
calls for his immediate arrest.
Here is what we know of the case so far:
1- Nalapad, 24, is the son of Congress MLA N A Haris from Shantinagar
seat in Bengaluru central. Nalapad had a verbal altercation with the
victim, identified as Vidvat, on Saturday night at a pub in UB City
Mall.
2- The fight happened when Nalapad objected to Vidvat, who was dining
along with his friend Praveen, for resting his fractured leg on a
chair. When Vidvat reacted rather rudely, asking Nalapad to mind his own
business, the 24-year-old Congress leader’s son along with his
accomplices assaulted Vidvat.
3- Praveen took a bleeding Vidvat to a nearby private hospital for
treatment, as he was punched in the face and chest and ended up with a
broken nose.
4- An FIR was lodged against Nalapad and five of his friends for thrashing the 24-year-old in Fergy Cafe.
5- Cubbon Park Inspector Vijaya Hadagalli said,”Vidvat was dining
along with Praveen when Nalapad objected to him resting his fractured
leg on a chair at the adjacent table. When Vidvat told Nalapad to mind
his business, the latter along with his friends thrashed him.”
6- Following the shameful incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also
tweeted and said, “Offenders should be punished to the full extent,
regardless of who they are. No less. No more.”
7- BJP
state unit President and former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa tweeted
saying “I am appalled at, and condemn, the ghastly attack by MLA N.A.
Haris’ son on innocent Vidvat. @CPBlr Police must arrest the culprit and
his goons to restore public confidence in the rule of law. Congress MLA
must counsel his absconding son to surrender.”
8- However, this is not the first time Nalapad had reacted in such a
way. Earlier, in 2016, a man in Bengaluru had alleged that Nalapad had
assaulted him at a bar in Shantinagar, as per a report by The News
Minute.
