Adesh varsity accused of harassing students
Complaints have been lodged at the office of the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, and Additional Director General of Police (Crime) against Adesh University, Bathinda, for non-refund of the fee of those students, who have been selected in other institutes and have vacated their seats.
The Bathinda police have started investigation as it has been marked to SP (City) Jaskaran Singh.The authorities of Adesh University have refuted the allegations. Vipul Babuta, advocate of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has sent the complaint on behalf of Mahima Gulati, a resident of Civil Lines, Ludhiana. It has been alleged that Mahima had taken admission in Adesh Institute of Dental Sciences & Research, Barnala road, Bathinda, (Adesh University) under the BDS course, session 2016-2017, through NEET-2016. She has stated that her admission was acknowledged after the payment Rs 2,91,500 on September 22, 2016. According to Mahima, after attending the classes for only two days, she decided to vacate her seat as her admission was confirmed in another institute. Mahima also mentioned that on October 5, after 12 days of her admission, a written representation was submitted to the concerned department/person for withdrawal of her seat and refund of the entire fee.She alleged that the institute started delaying the refund. She said she visited the institute more than 10 times but officials at the institute harassed her.Advocate Vipul Babuta said, “As the officials at the institute harassed her for eight months, we lodged a complaint with the UGC on May 24 and Punjab Police. As the matter come to the notice of the UGC, Adesh Institute refunded her fees at the end of July through RTGS.”Babuta said as the institute had refunded her fees, the matter was now about harassing students. “We want justice for harassment of students, which was against the norms of the UGC,” he added.He also demanded a list of last four years of such students, who had got their fee refunded. Advocate Babuta also said a case would be registered against the authorities under Sections of the IPC. He alleged that there were many cases regarding pendency of fee and harassment of students and the police would enquire into the matter.Jagdev Singh, Deputy Registrar of Adesh University, said, “We have refunded the fee of all students who cleared the terms and conditions as per law. If there was a delay, it was due to clearance of formalities. There is no misappropriation and anyone can check it,” he added.SP (City) Jaskaran Singh said the matter was under inquiry and they had demanded some papers from the institute. A statement can be made only after the inquiry is complete, he added.
