Police raid Adesh University amid financial irregularity charges

BATHINDA: Police conducted a raid at the Adesh University campus near Bathinda on Monday evening and collected records from its accounts branch following complaints of misappropriation of funds. Adesh University, having medical and dental colleges under it, is mired in charges of financial irregularities.
Police would scrutinize the records to look into alleged misappropriation of funds and misuse of the loans taken by the university. Sources said that Adesh Foundation, which runs the university, had taken loans of Rs 84 crore from banks in Muktsar and a dispute arose over the use of the money. The foundation is also setting up a university near Ambala in Haryana.
Dr H S Gill is chairman of Adesh Foundation and chancellor of the university, while Talwandi Sabo MLA Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu of SAD (Badal) is the president of the foundation. Sources said that Sidhu and Gill were not on talking terms for some

Jeet Mohinder's close associate and foundation member Surinder Sidhu filed a police complaint on July 8 against chancellor Dr Gill of misappropriating loan amount and spending it for personal use. Speaking to TOI, Jeet Mohinder alleged, "We got a tip-off that the funds were being misappropriated by Dr Gill. I and Gill are equal partners in the foundation which runs the university. As I was not interfering into the day-to-day affairs of the university, Gill misappropriated funds and cheated us. When we found irregularities in the transactions, we decided to get the matter probed."

Chancellor Dr H S Gill was not available for comments despite repeated calls.

When contacted, Adesh University vice-chancellor Dr G P I Singh said, "I am not aware of the irregularities in the university funds. Police had come here on Monday late evening and checked records in the finance department and took away copies of some documents. They never approached us for any information."
Bathinda senior superintendent of police Inder Mohan Singh said, "The record will be scrutinized by a financial expert or a chartered accountant." He said no case has been registered so far against anyone and a special investigation team headed by deputy superintendent of police Malkit Singh had been formed to investigate the matter.
